Hello, We have multiple Rubbermaid utility carts. This hand carts are used to move material from point A to point B. This carts are not ESD complaint or even conductive plastic. What is the proper ESD control mechanism for these carts? Is it just a grounding mesh on the bottom of the cart to the conductive flooring? Thanks, Frank
Answer
There is no way to ground an insulator to ground a non-conductor. The best practice would be to replace the Rubbermaid insulative carts with ESD protective versions. Mobile equipment is often grounded to the ESD floor using a ground drag chain, but conductive casters are better. The Rubbermaid insulative carts could be considered outside the ESD protected area, and ESD sensitive items would need to be packaged in containers that are low charging, conductive/dissipative, and provide the ESD control property of discharge shielding. This could be packaging in closed Statshield shielding bags or containers with lids in place.
