Question
In your opinion, is the reliability of CMOS IC that have survived a severe ESD discharge degraded? - Anonymous, Dorval, QC, Canada
Answer
If the path of the discharge included one of the CMOS inputs (pins or pads) then a severe ESD would definitely compromise the reliability of your CMOS unit. This will show up as a shortened life span and possibly malfunction intermittently. You can slice open the package and put the unit under a high power microscope or SEM to find the damaged area(s).
