Question What is the difference among the different types of ESD mats (i.e. rubber, vinyl, 3 layer, acrylic, laminate, etc.), in what circumstances are they used, and how do they compare in price?. - Ian, Victoria, BC, Canada
Answer Your question can be partially answered from our Tech Brief PS-2016, you'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the on-line file. There are several factors that go into choosing a mat material. First, what is the application, are you going to solder on this mat, apply harsh chemicals, do drop tests, is it for a floor or bench top? What are your internal specs for mat resistance? Once these have been determined, your search becomes more narrowed. How many benches or square feet are you covering. Is this a permanent or temporary setup? Micastat can be used as a permanent covering or as a mobile mat material. A rubber mat has good heat and chemical resistance. Vinyl tends to be more cost effective. Do you need an anti-fatigue material or not? Do you want a mat kit, which comes with all the hardware or do you want to custom cut your own mats? Finally, what color do you want. The selection chart listed above, when answering these questions will lead you to your ultimate choice. If you need assistance with your selection, please give us a call, fax or e-mail.
